Certification with the Ontario College of Teachers
Anyone applying for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers and for employment with an Ontario School Board is required to submit a current written Police Record Check report. This report must:
- be dated within six months of application for certification
- be dated within six months of application for employment when hired by an Ontario School Board.
Provided the timeline requirements are met, this same report MAY be accepted for both purposes.
To facilitate the processing of Police Record Checks for students applying for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers, OESC has negotiated an agreement with an Ontario Police Service to provide individual Police Record Check reports that will be accepted by the Ontario College of Teachers for certification, provided the report is dated within six months of their receipt of the application for certification. Provided the timeline requirements of employing Boards are met, this same report MAY be accepted for both purposes. The hiring policies of some employing School Boards vary. Please check with individual Boards as to their specific requirements.
OESC will conduct a Police Record Check that provides you with two original Police Record Check reports. One original report can be sent with the student’s application for certification to the Ontario College of Teachers. The other original can be submitted when applying to a Board for employment. When applying to a particular Board, students should request that the Board take a true copy of their original police report so that they can retain the original to use when applying to more than one Board. Students need to ensure that they follow the timelines set out both by the College and the prospective employer.
The OESC ID card that was required for your practicum assignments is not accepted for this purpose. A full WRITTEN report from a Police Service is required by the Ontario College of Teachers for certification purposes and by your future employer.
This means that your OESC ID card will not be accepted by the College for certification purposes.
IMPORTANT
To be accepted by the Ontario College of Teachers and employing Ontario School Boards, the police report must indicate that a search was completed on ALL names you are currently using or have used at any time in the past. These names must be listed on the police report in the exact same order they are entered on your Ontario College of Teachers application forms and any employment applications. This includes any and all of the following:
- Surname
- Maiden Name
- Former Names (e.g., Former Married Surnames, Nicknames)
- Your Name at birth as listed on your proof of identity documentation
(If you complete these forms you will receive 2 original Police Reports which are valid for a 6 month period, from date of issue, which can be used for application to the Ontario College of Teachers and for employment purposes)
These forms can be used by anyone requiring a written report for employment purposes.
